Privacy Policy
Effective date: August 22, 2026
This policy is a general template covering common US disclosure requirements for a small community organization. It is not a substitute for advice from a licensed attorney. Before publishing, have this reviewed by counsel familiar with your state's privacy laws and your specific data practices.
Who we are
Bloc Captain ("Bloc Captain," "we," "us," or "our") helps neighbors organize into small preparedness groups. This policy explains what information we collect through bloccaptain.org (the "Site"), how we use it, and the choices available to you. This policy applies to visitors and applicants located in the United States.
Information we collect
We collect two general categories of information: information you give us directly, and information collected automatically when you visit the Site.
Information you provide
- Contact details, including your name, email address, and phone number.
- Location details, including your street or cross streets, neighborhood, and approximate number of homes on your bloc.
- Application content, including your stated availability and anything you write in the "why do you want to do this" field.
This information is collected through our Bloc Captain application, which is hosted on Google Forms. Google's own privacy policy also applies to information submitted through that form. We do not control, and are not responsible for, Google's data practices.
Information collected automatically
- IP address.
- Browser type and version, device type, and operating system.
- Pages visited, links clicked, and time spent on the Site.
- Referring and exit pages, and approximate date and time of access.
This information is collected through standard server and hosting logs (for example, logs generated by our hosting provider, Vercel Inc.) as an ordinary part of operating a website. We do not currently use advertising cookies or third-party ad-tracking pixels on the Site. If that changes, we will update this policy.
How we use your information
- To review and respond to Bloc Captain applications.
- To communicate with you about your application, orientation, or your role as a Bloc Captain.
- To operate, maintain, secure, and improve the Site.
- To detect, investigate, and prevent fraud, abuse, or security incidents.
- To comply with applicable law, legal process, or governmental request.
We do not use your information for automated decision-making that produces legal or similarly significant effects, and we do not use your information to serve targeted advertising.
How we share your information
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with third parties for their own marketing purposes. We may share information with:
- Service providers who help us operate the Site and process applications, such as our hosting provider (Vercel Inc.) and Google (Google Forms). These providers are only permitted to use your information to provide services to us.
- Other neighbors serving as Bloc Captains or NET team members, limited to what is reasonably necessary to coordinate preparedness activities on your bloc, and only with your awareness that this is the purpose of the program.
- Law enforcement, regulators, or other parties, if required by law, subpoena, or legal process, or if necessary to protect the rights, property, or safety of Bloc Captain, our users, or the public.
- A successor organization, in the event of a merger, reorganization, or transfer of the program to another entity, subject to the same or equivalent privacy commitments.
Data retention
We retain application information for as long as needed to administer the Bloc Captain program, and automatically collected log information for a limited operational period (typically no more than a few months), after which it is deleted or aggregated in a way that no longer identifies you. We may retain information longer where required by law or necessary to resolve disputes.
Your privacy rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights under state privacy laws, including the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA/CPRA) and similar laws in states such as Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, and Utah. Subject to applicable exceptions, these rights may include the right to:
- Know what personal information we have collected about you.
- Request a copy of, or delete, your personal information.
- Correct inaccurate personal information.
- Opt out of the sale or "sharing" of personal information. We do not sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising, so there is currently nothing to opt out of.
- Not be discriminated against for exercising these rights.
To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the information below. We may need to verify your identity before fulfilling your request.
Children's privacy
The Site is intended for adults organizing neighborhood preparedness efforts. It is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
Data security
We use reasonable administrative and technical safeguards to protect your information. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Third-party links
The Site links to third-party services, including Google Forms. Those services have their own privacy policies, and we encourage you to review them. This policy does not apply to third-party sites or services.
Do Not Track
Some browsers offer a "Do Not Track" signal. Because there is no common industry standard for responding to these signals, the Site does not currently respond to them.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will update the effective date above. Continued use of the Site after changes take effect means you accept the revised policy.
